This globular, polygonal-shaped dinoflagellate is armored, meaning it has a hard outer coating. The outer surface of the cell has a detailed ornamental pattern, with a “horn,” or thick spine, at the top and two at the base. The red tide in California is called Alexandrium tamarense. This red tide glows bright blue at night, and looks similar to the bioluminescence in Florida. However, it is a different species of dinoflagellate. The Florida red tide that occurs in the Gulf of Mexico is from an algae called Karenia brevis.

Scientists sometimes refer to red tides as harmful algal Bioluminescent dinoflagellates range in size from about 30 µm to 1 mm, and are found in all the world’s oceans. Occasionally they are found in high concentrations, resulting in red tides, so called because the high abundance of organisms discolors the water. The species of dinoflagellates causing red tide are: Karenia brevis causing red tide in the Gulf of Mexico produces a neurotoxin called brevetoxin. Alexendrium fundyense is responsible for the red tide in the Gulf of Maine, produces a toxin named saxitoxin.
